War Is Justified A Continuation Of Policy - 1811 Words
Abstract This paper will examine the claim that ââ¬Å"war is merely a continuation of policy by other meansâ⬠in regards to World War II. It will first examine the broad context in which Clausewitz constructed this theory, that ââ¬Å"war is merely a continuation of policyâ⬠, and then move on to widen the scope of investigation to that of Clausewitzââ¬â¢s theory in connection with WW2. Within the scope of WW2, this paper will specifically be inspecting how Clausewitzââ¬â¢s theory can be seen in the United States, Britain, and German policy and war strategy during WW2 . The German perspective of this paper will examine how economy played into German policy and how consequently, this contributed to Germanyââ¬â¢s effort and success in waging a second world war. This paper will then explore FDR (United States) and Churchillââ¬â¢s (Britain) approach to policy and military objectives within WW2. Finally, the United States aspect will deal with how evident Clausewitzà ¢â¬â¢s theory is when dealing with policy in Japan. Organ Donatingââ¬Â¦ Good or Bad Free Essays
Organ Donation What is going to happen to your body when you die? Will you be buried, cremated, or will you use it for the benefit of others? Organ donations can save lives and be used for research. Organ donation is not solely restricted to people who have passed. Donating is also possible when you are alive. We will write a custom essay sample on Organ Donatingâ⬠¦ Good or Bad? or any similar topic only for you Order Now Every American needs to become an organ donor because millions of lives could be saved. Saving lives after death is one of the major motivating factors for organ donations. One organ can save up to eight lives (ââ¬Å"Organ Donation Factsâ⬠). There are over 114,000 people waiting for organ transplants (ââ¬Å"Organ Donation Factsâ⬠). There was a case of a womanââ¬â¢s husband dying from a car crash and he donated his organs. A few months after his death she got letters in the mail that his organs saved the lives of five people, one of which was a single mother of two small children. On average, eighteen people die a day from being on the waiting list for organ transplants (ââ¬Å"Organ Donationsâ⬠). Every ten minutes someone is added to the waiting list (ââ¬Å"The Need Is Realâ⬠). These tragic facts are just some of the reasons why people need to become organ donors. It is also possible to donate certain organs while still being alive. While this is more difficult, there is an excellent success rate for the surgeries (CNN Health). Most of these situations involve donating to a family member, saving the life of someone cared for by the donator. Also, by donating to a family member it makes you closer to that person. After you donate you will be contacted by the person that got your donated organ, in case you want to talk to them ( Living Donors Online). In 2010 more than eighteen thousand kidneys were donated by live donors (ââ¬Å"Save A Lifeâ⬠). If a person needs a new kidney they are on dialysis, but if you would donate a kidney to them it would double there life span (ââ¬Å"Benefits Of Living Donationâ⬠). Donating an organ while being alive is an incredibly generous thing to do and every American should consider. Yet another option is whole body donations for science and research. There is a significant shortage of human tissue, the tissue that they have are being used to find cures for cancer and neurological disorders (Fox News). Tissue is also needed to give surgeons operating experience (Fox News). If surgeons do not get the experience they need then when they go into surgery on someone they are not prepared and are more likely to make a mistake. Also firefighters and EMTââ¬â¢s need experience with tissue because of burns and emergency medical treatment (Iiam). Also when you donate your entire body it can be used in museums for educational purposes. This educates people on how the body works and why we should be organ donors (Iiam). Donating for science is a very useful way to donate organs after you die. While donating your body and organs is obviously a selfless and beneficial act, there are some people who are opposed to organ donation. There are some who argue that if one is in a situation that requires serious medical attention, doctors will not try as hard to save you because you are a donor and could save others. However, doctors will put just as much effort into saving you because only the transplant team knows if you are an organ donor. Some also believe that old people cannot donate organs, making it impossible for people who die of natural causes to donate. There is no defined age limit for a donor; organs have been successfully transplanted from people in their seventies and eighties. Every American needs to become an organ donor to save and help many lives. Your body has no use to you after you have died. Also you could save up to eight peoples lives. Donating organs while you are alive is also an option when donating and it could save the life of someone very important to you. Research is a very important part of organ donating because it trains medical personnel to be better prepared so that they can save lives when they are working. When you get your license or renew your license, be sure to answer yes to being an organ donor. How to cite Organ Donatingâ⬠¦ Good or Bad?, Essay examples
Country Study Project United Kingdom
Question: Describe about the political, economic, social environment of United Kingdom? Answer: Introduction Market evaluation and market research has become very important for an organization so as to expand its business to the target market. Market research reveals adequate information to the management and hence will support them to take appropriate decision about the market selection. Generally a market research will identify the research related to buying behavior of the customers, potential of the market, political situation of the market, economic and social concerns, government rules and regulations etc. The government policies and regulations of the target country are also taken into consideration for the research. From the information obtained through such market researches the management can relate that information with the product lines of their organization (Dey, Bhattacharya and Ho, 2014). If the information suits the organizations requirement then they will go forward. Appropriate market entry strategies will be adopted and various strategies will be formulated to become succ essful. Through this report a specific country United kingdom is taken into consideration and has be conducted a study based on its, political, economical, social, situations. A statistical record of the economic situation of the country is prepared and given in the report. With the support of this data decision related to market selection is performed. Some market entry modes which are suitable for the country United Kingdom is also suggested with justification. Market evaluation The United Kingdom is taken into consideration for the purpose of market analysis. The political, economic, social environment of UK is analyzed here. Through this analysis the organizations will be able to identify that UK is an appropriate target market so as to enhance their business. This analysis will also help the management to eliminate risks associated with international trading. Political Environment As the United Kingdom has a democratic government, the political situation of the country is generally very stable. Such political situations will be very favorable for a business organization to establish their business in this market. The chances of the introduction of controversial regulations and policies are less in such political situation. This will provide an organization of any industry a strong base for performing business operations. The political events like elections are held once on four years which reduces the risks associated with change in the existing policies and procedures. The business organization can prepare for a change when the next election comes. This can avoid uncertainty about the political issues and can enter into contracts without any risk feeling (Hegbrant and Hellberg, 2014). Since it is a democratic country the ultimate power is in the hand of the population. The chances of public rivalries are very high in democratic markets. At any time the strikes and other public provocations can break up which can hinder the business operations of the international organizations. Nothing can be done under such situations. The competitors with political influence can always be threat to the international organizations. They can also put the organizations into political issues deliberately. Economic Environment The flexibility in the interest rate of the UK economy can affect the business operations of an organization in UK. The deviation of the interest rate is from 3.7% to 4.5% in the recent years. These steep deviations can affect the planning and budgeting of the organizations. Inflation can also reduce the buying potential of the consumers which makes them to spend less. If they buying power of the customer reduces then the market will be of no hope for the organizations. To survive in such markets the organizations will have to adopt competitive pricing strategies (Parutis, 2014). The UK government also imposes various tariffs and quotas on the organizations who want to perform business operations there. Apart from this they also impose tax while exporting goods to UK they impose VAT and other taxes. Hence it will be practical to open up a factory in UK so as to avoid the quotas and other taxes. If the organizations are from a home country with higher labor costs then this market is a good opportunity for them as they can reduce the cost of production, transportation, tax, etc. But organizations from the home country like china where cost of labor is relatively very low then it will be difficult for them to establish in this market. Such organizations will have to sacrifice any one (Schmuecker, 2014). Some of the economic conditions like unemployment can certainly hinder the success of the organizations in UK market. Unemployment can certainly affect the buying potential of the customers. Unemployment and situations like global economic saturations can certainly affect the international business organizations operating in any market including UK. If the personal disposable income of the customers is hindered through the factors like high interest rates, taxation and inflation then the purchasing power get decreases. The occurrence of such cases is unpredictable in the case of the UK market (Cole and Lucchesi, 2014). Social environments The social environment of UK is enriched with various social backgrounds like religion, race, culture, education levels, population, gender, age distribution, buying habits and lifestyle. Hence the organizations have the opportunity to identify their own target customers. The population of the UK is relatively highly savvy and relies on the internet and online shopping facilities. The people out there have less time to spend on shopping as their life is busy scheduled. Almost all families are having double income and they have the potential to spend on luxury products. Hence the opportunities for the fast food restaurants are very high in this market. The organizations which provide online services, free home delivery and other services are welcomed here (Parutis, 2014). The population of this market is generally educated and is having the tendency to get adapted to new products and services. This attitude of the population provides a chance for the new entrants into the market. They mainly look for high quality and good service. There is also a diverse religious practice in UK which can be utilized for the promotional activities. The population of UK is also relatively high which is around 64.1 million which a promising customer base for business operations (Conklin, Forouhi, Surtees, Khaw, Wareham and Monsivais, 2014). Markets position in trade and foreign investment Since 2004 the UK retains a long standing top most position in Foreign Direct Investment rankings. Although the country had to face many declines which are about 7% in the FDI investment projects it maintained to retain its topmost position. In Europe, UK has been identified as one among five countries where risk free investments can be made. Recently for the first time Germany obtained a highest share of manufacturing investments than that of UK. But still the dominance of the UK market is largely flourished. Some of the major investors of UK are US, Germany, France etc. Some of the industries like IT, automobiles, equipments which includes production are the prime industries which are gaining more FDI. The FDI in financial services sector is declining. Governments policies and regulations The government of the nation is very supportive for business organization and motivates the organization to set up their production process in the areas of UK where there is high degree of unemployment. They also provide subsidies for the same. But in some cases it may affect the organization as it may become costly for the organizations to set up factories in rural areas. When the manufacturing cost increases the cost of the product also increases which can dissatisfy the customers out there. The government regulations of minimum wage to the employees can also harm the business operations of the organizations. Due to the equal opportunity act proposed by the government the organizations are supposed to provide priority to all individuals who apply for the opening (Gulbrandsen, 2014). Decision Making in choosing the target market based on the economic data In a recent research conducted on UK economy it is identified that the economy has faced a growth by 2.6%. Since 2007 the UK economy hasnt faced such a dramatic growth. In 2014 the economy has grown up to 0.5% which shows this economy is very appropriate economy for making investments. Although there is a sudden decline in the economy of about 0.7% economist says that it is temporary. The growth of the service sector has enhanced by 0.8%, but that of the construction declined by 1.8%. The manufacturing sector remained the worst performance sector in 2013 which is by 0.1% (UK economy records fastest growth since 2007, 2015) Some of the other attributes which makes the UK market attractive for investment and business enhancement is the quality of life cycle of the society, their culture of fast adaptation , highly savvy population etc. Apart from that the political situation of the UK is very stable. The infrastructure of the country is maintained in such a way that it supports foreign investment and international businesses. Hence it can be recommended that the organizations can move forward into the UK market to flourish their business. Market Entry Mode Once the target market is decided it is the turn of the management to identify the market entering strategies. The strategies adopted should be reliable such that it doesnt harm or risk the business operations. A risk free and cost effective method of market entry strategy is direct and indirect exporting. When the UK market is considered the exporting charges and other taxes are high. Hence the market entry methods which will be appropriate for this market will be licensing and franchising. Through licensing the organization can get into agreement with the government to perform manufacturing and sales in UK for a specific period of time. Through licensing the organization will have to take the responsibility of risks associated with international business. The political and legal interventions may harm the business if the management has not taken adequate measures (Karajz and Gubik, 2014). Through franchising the risks associated with business can be avoided or eliminated. The full responsibility of the business operations will be for the franchiser. The profit will be shared with the franchise based on the agreement. But the chances of information sharing is high therough this market entry mode (IoraitÃâââ¬â, 2014). Hence the organization can first try for direct exporting so as to identify the success of the product in UK market. Then based on the feedback of the customers the organization can either get into the licensing or franchising market entry mode. Each market entry mode has its own advantages and disadvantages. It is the efficiency of the management to reduce the risks and to enhance the benefits. Implementation Plan An implementation plan can be formulated based on the data collected from market analysis for the purpose of enhancing the business operations to the UK market. The target market is identified which is UK for enhancing the business operations. Market analysis is conducted on the UK and various aspects like political, social, economical, government rules and regulations, FDI etc of UK market is identified. Based on the data obtained the benefits and risks associated with the business operations in UK are identified. Proper budgeting plan is formulated by considering the market entry modes and the charges associated with it. The sources of finance are arranged for meeting the expansion requirements. Recruitment and staffing for the purpose of expansion and for the host country office are arranged appropriately. Training and development is given to the employees who are considered as expatriates. Conclusion A report has been prepared which highlights a country study project. A country United Kingdom is taken into consideration and market analysis is conducted on it to identify whether the market is appropriate for business enhancement. The political, social, economical status of the country is researched and is highlighted. Form the study it is evident that the country has a stable economic and political condition which is favorable business operations. Some of the statistical data ate provided in the report. The government rules and regulations are also discussed. From the research it is identified that the country is suitable for business operations. The market entry modes like licensing and franchising are suggested for the organizations. The risks and benefits associated with those market entry modes are also discussed. An implementation plan is developed at the end of the report. The implementation plan is prepared by keeping the information collected through research. References Conklin, A. I., Forouhi, N. The entire hospital is carpeted to give it a comforting feeling, as opposed to a cold hospital floor feel. It is equipped with a large open lounge area, the admissions office, patient rooms, and a spacious glass-covered Florida room. It also contains recreational facilities ranging from exercising equipment to a pool table. Balancing low cost with high quality â⬠¢Shouldice is able to balance low cost with high quality in several different ways. The low cost of the operation room furnishings ($30,000) is one reason. The cost of operating rooms in other hospitals is quadruple that because the equipment needed is much more extensive. They are able to reduce costs with only having one ââ¬Å"crash cartâ⬠per floor of the hospital, compared with hundreds. Turnover is low, so there is another cost-cutting measure. They pay their employees over average than most hospitals, which raises their budget more. This is how their quality remains at a high level, while being low cost competitors at the same time. Their full utilization of their time also helps in cost cutting measures. Target Group of Customers: Commonalities Production Process â⬠¢Shouldice Hospital has created a niche service in the medical field that targets only external abdominal hernias or hernias from patients suffering from recurrences. They also partner patients with similar backgrounds, jobs, or interests into the same room to further add to their value proposition. â⬠¢To further add to the delivery of their value proposition, Shouldice Hospitalââ¬â¢s service process is unique in its own right. From being kind enough to wake patients in the same room for surgery within minutes (a procedure I have never seen another hospital perform) to almost immediately after surgery administering counseling activities. When patients arrive at the facility, they are immediately able to mingle with other patients who had their operation on that same day. This is a psychological procedure to make the patients feel comfortable about their operation, again, not a practice that is done by other hospitals. A simple blueprint of their production process is attached to this essay to further demonstrate their unique service delivery. The service delivery far exceeds the expectations of patients and perfectly matches their value proposition. Five Dimensions of Service Quality â⬠¢Reliability: Delivery on Promises oReliability is defined as the ability to perform the promised service dependably and accurately. Throughout this paper I have stated how Shouldice Hospital is living up to their service value proposition in many different dimensions. Shouldice maintains promises made with regards to pricing, delivery, and problem resolution. They are always on the same schedule Monday through Friday, and make careful diagnoses from the start. â⬠¢Responsiveness: Being Willing to Help oResponsiveness is the willingness to help customers and to provide prompt service. Shouldiceââ¬â¢s accessibility, willingness to listen to every patient individually, and immediate attention as soon as the patient enters the door shows their proficiency in responsiveness. â⬠¢Assurance: Inspiring Trust and Confidence oAssurance is defined as employeesââ¬â¢ knowledge and courtesy and the ability of the firm and its employees to inspire trust and confidence. In the medical field it is extremely important to achieve assurance because of the high risk factor. Trust and confidence are apparent when you enter the doors, when you receive your first examination, when you go to your first counseling session with patients that have just had the operation, to when you leave the hospital. The patients have a great amount of assurance when they discover the experience and skill level of the doctors, and when they hear about the good reputation that they hold. With no advertising in place, their customer base is highly reliant upon word-of-mouth and reputation is everything. â⬠¢Empathy: Treating Customers as Individuals oEmpathy is defined as the caring, individualized attention that the firm provides its customers. Since Shouldice hospital positioned itself as specialist in hernia surgery they are able to compete with larger hospitals in this area. The specialized attention they give to each patient also shows there successfulness with regards to empathy. With all of the counseling sessions the patients endure throughout their stay, each patient is treated like family members of a huge group. Each patient is understood by their peers, and the experienced staff is empathetic and knowledgeable about what they are going through also. â⬠¢Tangibles: Representing the Service Physically oTangibles are defined as the appearance of physical facilities, equipment, personnel, and communication materials. From the moment that you decide that Shouldice is the facility that you want to operate on you, they send you an informative brochure detailing the facility and procedure you will endure. I mentioned above some of the amenities that Shouldice offers for their patients that makes them proficient in delivering tangibles. Employment at Shouldice Hospital Compared to Other Hospitals â⬠¢Nurses: The nurse to patient ratio in other hospitals in the Ontario is 1:4, compared to Shouldiceââ¬â¢s ratio of 1:15. Their unique service delivery process can be attributed to these differences. Most of their time is spent in counseling activities for the patients, instead of the grueling activities nurses do at other hospitals such as paperwork and changing bed pans. There are no bed pans at Shouldice. The waiting list to be employed as a nurse in this facility is endless, while hospitals in the area are extremely short staffed. â⬠¢ Doctors: This position appeals to experienced doctors who ââ¬Å"want to watch their children grow up. â⬠Their typical day only lasts from 7 a. m. to 4 p. m. which are very attractive hours for me. They are only on call one weekday night in ten and one weekend in ten. Compared to other hospitals where doctors work long strenuous hours and are on call all of the time. They are paid 15% more than a surgeon in Ontario. The only downside, if you could call it a downside, for doctors is that they loose touch with other medical surgical disciples since they are always performing the same surgery with the same disciplines. There are a very small percentage of doctors that elect to leave the organization once they have started, which results in low turnover. â⬠¢Administration and Support Staff: The administration and support staff are non-union individuals because their pay is higher than comparable jobs in the area. There is very low turnover because they have a ââ¬Å"no one firedâ⬠policy. One characteristic that I found interesting was that there is no organization chart because, ââ¬Å"A chart tends to make people think they are boxed in jobs. â⬠The administration staff is cross-trained to do every other administration and support staff job, so if the situation arises where they are needed else where, there is no problem in doing so. Growth Alternatives â⬠¢Dr. Shouldice seeks a desire to find ways of increasing the hospitals capacity. There are a few proposals on the table that help make this happen. oStart performing operations on Saturday which would increase capacity by 20%. There are currently no operations performed on Saturdays and Sundays. Patients who have their operation late in the week still stay at the facility during the weekend. This is frowned upon by all of the current Shouldice employees. oThey could expand their number of beds by 50%, and schedule the operating rooms more heavily. This would require an investment of $4 million dollars. oThey could expand into Toronto, or even in the United States. oOffer more specialties such as eye surgery, varicose veins, or diagnostic services. My Alternatives â⬠¢Expand the capacity of the current hospital to meet demand â⬠¢Advertising Campaign â⬠¢Hire more surgeons staff â⬠¢Operate on Saturday â⬠¢Expand into the United States Solution Rationale â⬠¢With one hundred and thirty acres to build on, I believe that Shouldice should expand the capacity of the hospital to meet the rising demand. If they proceed in this direction then they would be able to begin a marketing campaign that would tremendously attract new patients into the operating room. In order to meet the increased workload of the new expansion new staff would need to be hired to make sure company morale remains high. With the hiring of the new staff, it will be easy to maintain the same working relationships and attitudes they have with their patients. The current staff can empower incoming new staff to maintain the same business culture and learn the specialized way of Shouldice Hospital. Expansion in the United States would be a great move after my first alternative is assessed, completed, and begins to earn profits. This will not happen overnight. It will be a long process with many trials and tribulations. â⬠¢The Shouldice Method is very unique and does not need to be copied in anyway. The current threat of other hospitals stealing this unique technique and performing it in the wrong way can prove to be disastrous for Shouldice. Immediate attention needs to be given to this problem. A thought on what to do includes getting negative media attention towards the hospitals who are trying to reproduce the technique. I believe that the marketing campaign that will be launched could prove to be beneficial instead of hazardous to Shouldice Hospital in this respect. By implementing my alternatives, I believe, that Shouldice Hospital will continue to remain successful in their specialization and offer a superior value proposition, all while remaining to balance low cost with high quality.

Enrique Pena Nieto, Former President of Mexico
Enrique Pena Nieto, Former President of Mexico Enrique Peà ±a Nieto (born July 20, 1966) is a Mexican lawyer and politician. A member of the PRI (Institutional Revolutionary Party), he was elected president of Mexico in 2012 for a six-year term. Mexican presidents are only allowed to serve a single term. Fast Facts: Enrique Peà ±a Nieto Known For: President of Mexico, 2012ââ¬â2018Born: July 20, 1966à in Atlacomulco,à State of Mexico,à MexicoParents: Gilberto Enrique Peà ±a del Mazo, Marà a del Perpetuo Socorro Ofelia Nieto SnchezEducation: Panamerican UniversityAwards and Honors:à Collar of theà Order of the Aztec Eagle, National Order of Juan Mora Fernndez, Grand Cross with Gold Plaque, Order of Prince Henry, Grand Collar,à Order of Isabella the Catholic, Grand CrossSpouse(s): Mà ³nica Pretelini, Angà ©lica RiveraChildren: Paulina, Alejandro, Nicole (with Pretelini), one additional child outside marriage with Maritza Dà az HernndezNotable Quote: I hope for my children, and for all Mexicans, that they can be proud to be Mexican, proud of their heritage, and proud that they have a peaceful, inclusive, vibrant country that is playing a role in the world. Early Life Enrique Peà ±a Nieto was born on July 20, 1966 in Atlacomulco, a town about 50 miles northwest of Mexico City. His father Severiano Peà ±a was an electrical engineer and the mayor of the town of Acambay, located in the State of Mexico. Two uncles served as governors of the same state. During his junior year in high school, he went to Denis Hall School in Alfred, Maine to learn English. In 1984 he enrolled at the Panamerican University in Mexico City, where he earned a degree in legal studies. Marriage and Children Enrique Peà ±a Nieto married Mà ³nica Pretelini in 1993: she died suddenly in 2007, leaving him three children. He remarried in 2010 in a fairytale wedding to Mexican telenovelas star Angelica Rivera. He had a child out of wedlock in 2005. His attention to this child (or lack thereof) has been a persistent scandal. Political Career Enrique Peà ±a Nieto got an early start on his political career. He was a community organizer while still in his early 20s and has maintained a presence in politics ever since. In 1999, he worked on the campaign team of Arturo Montiel Rojas, who was elected governor of Mexico State. Montiel rewarded him with the position of administrative secretary. Peà ±a Nieto was elected to replace Montiel in 2005 as governor, serving from 2005ââ¬â2011. In 2011, he won the PRI Presidential nomination and immediately became the front-runner for the 2012 elections. 2012 Presidential Election Peà ±a had been a well-liked governor: he had delivered popular public works for the State of Mexico during his administration. His popularity, combined with his movie-star good looks, made him the early favorite in the election. His main opponents were leftist Andres Manuel Là ³pez Obrador of the Party of the Democratic Revolution and Josefina Vzquez Mota of the conservative National Action Party. Peà ±a ran on a platform of security and economic growth and overcame his partys past reputation for corruption in winning the election. A record turnout of 63 percent of eligible voters chose Peà ±a (38% of the vote) over Là ³pez Obrador (32%) and Vzquez (25%). Opposing parties claimed several campaign violations by the PRI, including vote-buying and receiving extra media exposure, but the results stood. Peà ±a took office on Dec. 1, 2012, replacing outgoing President Felipe Calderà ³n. Public Perception Although he was elected easily and most polls suggested a decent approval rating, some disliked Peà ±a Nietos public persona. One of his worst public gaffes came at a book fair, where he claimed to be a big fan of the popular novel The Eagles Throne. When pressed, he could not name the author. This was a serious blunder because the book was written by the prestigious Carlos Fuentes, one of Mexicos most celebrated novelists. Others found Peà ±a Nieto to be robotic and far too slick. He has often been compared, in a negative manner, to American politician John Edwards. The notion (correct or not) that he was a stuffed shirt also raised concerns due to the PRI partys notoriously corrupt past. By August 2016, Peà ±a Nieto had the lowest approval rating of any Mexican president since polling began in 1995. The number dipped even further to a mere 12% when gas prices rose in January 2017.ââ¬â¹ Challenges for Peà ±a Nietos Administration President Peà ±a took control of Mexico during a troubled time. One big challenge was fighting the drug lords that control much of Mexico. Powerful cartels with private armies of professional soldiers make billions of dollars trafficking drugs every year. They are ruthless and do not hesitate to murder policemen, judges, journalists, politicians, or anyone else who challenges them. Felipe Calderà ³n, Peà ±a Nietoââ¬â¢s predecessor as president, declared an all-out war on the cartels, kicking over a hornetââ¬â¢s nest of death and mayhem. Mexicoââ¬â¢s economy, an important factor for Mexican voters, took a huge hit during the international crisis of 2009. Peà ±a Nieto was friendly with the United States and stated that he wanted to maintain and strengthen economic ties with his neighbor to the north. Peà ±a Nieto has had a mixed record. During his tenure, police captured the nations most notorious drug lord, Joaquin El Chapo Guzman, but Guzman escaped from prison not long afterward. This was a huge embarrassment for the president. Even worse was the disappearance of 43 college students near the town of Iguala in September 2014: they are presumed dead at the hands of the cartels. Further challenges developed during the campaign and election of President Donald Trump in the United States. With proclaimed policies of a border wall paid for by Mexico, U.S.-Mexico relations took a turn for the worse. The End of Peà ±a Nietos Presidency Toward the end of 2018, additional scandals erupted for the Peà ±a Nieto presidency. Construction of a luxury home for the president and his wife by a company that was then awarded a large government contract led to accusations of conflict of interest. The president was never found guilty of wrongdoing, but he nevertheless found himself apologizing for the outcome. Peà ±a Nieto and his administration were also accused of spying on journalists and political activists. At the same time, an increase in drug trafficking and violence seemed to be linked to the outcome of the 2018 elections. Just before leaving the presidency, Peà ±a Nieto was involved with negotiations with the United States and Canada to restructure the NAFTA trade agreement. The new United States-Mexico-Canada Agreementà (USMCA) was signed on Peà ±a Nietos last day in office at the G20 Summit in Argentina. Sources: Puente, Teresa.
