A few weeks ago, I realized at Activities Midway (by the way, check out Dancetroupes performance at the Midway this year MIT students can dance too!) that this is going to be my LAST Orientation Activities Midway (I had manned the Model UN booth for the last three years running ____). And this feeling has been emerging a lot this is my LAST fall first day of classes this is my LAST fall first day of lecture this is my LAST time pretending to be a froshie and going to REX events (you have no idea how easily this works for me I successfully merged into a band of 14s at a party and remained undetected for the whole time, much to my amusement (yay for looking young? haha tangent: i still get ided every time when i buy tylenol at cvs. you have to be 18 to do so. guess how young i look then =_____=)) But anywhoo, back to the actual subject. In many ways, I still have a hard time rationalizing that I am a senior. After this semester, I will be one class away from my BS in Biology, and two classes away from my BS in History. In other words, three classes removed from being out of this place! AHHHHH what has happened to me?! lol 8.01 is still hard for me! (true story, as I try to help froshies with their psets) i dont think im done with mit yet! _____ Anyways, this is my class schedule this semester, in case you are curious: 5.60 Thermodynamics and Kinetics 12 units One of my last remaining biology requirements. The only thing I have to say about thermo is that you dont understand it, or you..dont understand it. :) I mean, I dont think Im bad at it but I am still having problems attempting to visualize things like U, q, w, H, and S. Meh, I get by. Lets see what I think about the Carnot Cycle rears its ugly head (that was one topic in one of my MCAT prep books that I never understood fully). 7.18 Topics in Experimental Biology 30 units Also known as Project Lab, this is the Biology Majors rite of passage at MIT. It is unofficially and colloquially known as the class at MIT with the most number of units, but its the way it is because when you sign up for Project Lab, you are basically signing your life this semester away to the Gods of Experimental Failure, the Gods of Insomnia and Frustration, and the Gods of Controls That Dont Work The Way They Are Supposed To. (a often circulated joke in the biology labs is that the reason it takes an extra 1-2 years to get a bio phd compared to chemistry and physics phds is that you have to allow that extra time for unexplained experimental screwups, trial and error, and time for your experimental animals to grow) Im starting to get a taste of it, as I spent over 30 hours in lab my very first week after starting Project Lab. Im characterizing this completely novel gene in C. elegans (which I have been doing since last year, on-and-off, actually), and this semester Im trying to make a coordinated effort to finish off the project. If all goes well, Ill do a mini-poster presentation here with you guys! :) 21H.007 EMPIRE: Intro to Ancient and Medieval Studies 12 units There are two introductory survey classes in the History Department that are very popular with freshmen. One is How to Stage a Revolution, which had been cited in some news articles as an example of innovative teaching at MIT. The other is Empire, which was just started last year by a trio of amazing professors, Profs. Bahr, Broadhead, and Goldberg, all specialists in Ancient or Medieval History (before 1700). Now, Im really a more contemporary historian (I have not taken any history class at MIT that goes back later than the American Revolution), so taking this class has been interesting, because one of the things you learn very quickly about Ancient History is the scarcity of first-hand sources, whereas in my thesis research and whatnot Im accustomed to being inundated with accounts and sources. In fact, I am always asking myself how I can pare down my resources to make my paper more manageable, rather than to extract a 5-page essay out of a single Roman coin, like scholars of Ancient History do. But at the end of the day though, the professors are awesome. Like I was relating to Dora 11 (the other history major in my class!) earlier, Professor Broadhead simply has to open his mouth, and the next 1.5 hours will disappear before your eyes. :) Mere words will not suffice to describe how much I love the humanities at MIT. I hope to do a lot more of drawing you into this hidden gem of MIT in this year (and my last year to ramble to you) to come! 21H.ThT Thesis Pre-Tutorial 12 units Yeah, here it is the crown jewel of any humanities major THE THESIS. But its all good! I think I am researching a very interesting topic, and so I am excited to be writing this paper. During the Second World War, multitudes of Americans with Japanese ancestry on the Pacific coast were hoarded up into cattle trains and forcibly removed to internment camps located in the barren lands of the Pacific West. Their only crime? Looking Japanese. In the years that these camps were in operation, a unique culture developed and flourished within these camps, as the internees learned to make a living for themselves and make light of the situation that they are in. Many memoirs from this period are solemn and bleak, but tinged with heartwarming stories of perseverance and gaman (roughly translates to resilience) in this trying period. My subject of research is to investigate the social order that emerged in these camps, most notably the educational programs and analyzing how these programs were different (or similar) in bringing the camp residents together when compared to other organized activities like sports (primarily baseball) or religion. The most interesting part of this project is that I am culling my sources from the camp newspapers that were published in this period (and for the most part, almost completely preserved in online archives yay!). These newspapers were usually announcement bulletins published by the internees, but also served as a dual purpose as entertainment and a source of information as the internment period dragged on. By the end of the internment period in 1945, many of these newspapers were published several times a week, even resembling actual newspapers. Its fascinating to get a glimpse into the past through these yellowed tabloids, and the amount of information they yield about camp life is actually quite amazing (are you curious about what was served at the dining hall every night?). Whats more, many of these newspapers contain a Japanese section, written completely in Japanese for the benefit of the issei (first generation Japanese immigrants), who cannot read English. I am comfortable dec iphering Japanese text, so reading through these sections had also proved to valuable in unlocking an additional level of understanding of camp life, previously unstudied by historians yet. Basically, this is also really novel research into the social order of the internment camps from this period, so yay for new discoveries! Im actually quite excited about both my biology and history projects this year. And so finally, the other class Im taking is probably: PRE.MED Introduction to the Medical School Interview Fridays I applied to medical schools this summer, and now Im starting to hear back from a bunch. With the exception of just one weekend, I will actually be gone every Friday in October for interviews. Although it is definitely nice to have an excuse to travel the country and hopefully go to many places where I have never been to, it would probably be an exhausting experience as well. (and how the heck am I supposed to find time to work on my bio and history research_____) At the end of the day, though, I just hope to try my best (Im actually kind of nervous, for the first one thats coming up in three weeks!), and have fun finding my new home for the next 4 years :) Anyways, that is a lot of talking from me. US Congress created the Hipaa bill in 1996 because of public concern of how their private information was being used. It is the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, which Congress created to protect confidentiality, privacy and security of patient information. It was also for health care documents to be passed electronically. Hipaa is a privacy rule, which gives patients control over their health information. Patients have to give permission any healthcare provider can disclose any information placed in the individual’s medical records. It helps limit protected health information (PHI) to minimize the chance of inappropriate disclosure. It establishes national-level standards that healthcare providers must comply with and strictly investigates compliance related issues while holding violators to civil or criminal penalties if they violate the privacy of a person’s PHI. Hipaa also has boundaries for using and disclosing health records by covered enti ties; a healthcare provider, health plan, and healthcare clearinghouse. It also supports the cause of disclosing PHI without a person’s consent for individual healthcare needs, public benefit and national interests. The portability part of Hipaa guarantees patients health insurance to employees after losing a job, making sure health insurance providers can’t discriminate against people because of health status or pre-existing condition, and keeps their files safe while being sent electronically. Major Themes of Slaughter House by Kurt Vonnegut Essay

In Slaughterhouse-Five, the author, Kurt Vonnegut, did an excellent job to narrate the life story of Billy Pilgrim, a man who could travel between his past and future back and forth. And as readers went through the novel, there were two major themes that would stick in their mind, which were the condemnation of war, and the attitude towards life. The central event of the book, the bombing of Dresden, has caught the readers’ attention to the power of a war. The unnecessary war attack brought 135,000 German civilians to death, and hundreds of artistic and historical buildings were destroyed -â€Å"Dresden was like the moon now nothing but minerals† (81). Furthermore, as the book mentioned two times that during World War II in Germany, candles and†¦show more content†¦Throughout the comparison between a slaughterhouse and human’s world, Vonnegut successfully exposed the anti-war theme in this novel. Moreover, Vonnegut stated his hatred toward any kinds of killing at the beginning of the chapter, â€Å"I had [have] told my sons that they were [are] not under any circumstances to take part in massacres, and that the news of massacres of enemies was [is] not to fill them with satisfaction or glee† (13). On the other hand, the reason Vonnegut only talked about the life story of Billy on Tralfamadore was because he wanted to present his unique point of view about time and free will. There, the Tralfamadorians taught Billy that they did not want to make any changes or to do anything, since they already believed that everything had been determine, no matter in past, present, or future. In their point of view, they thought every single event would always happen, and they could not make any changes to it, so that they tried to â€Å"Ignore the awful times, and concentrate on the good ones† (55). Through this philosophy, it helped Bill felt better toward deaths and the awful things he had experienced in his past life. Most of these situations involve donating to a family member, saving the life of someone cared for by the donator. Also, by donating to a family member it makes you closer to that person. After you donate you will be contacted by the person that got your donated organ, in case you want to talk to them ( Living Donors Online). In 2010 more than eighteen thousand kidneys were donated by live donors (â€Å"Save A Life†). In 1999, he worked on the campaign team of Arturo Montiel Rojas, who was elected governor of Mexico State. Montiel rewarded him with the position of administrative secretary. Peà ±a Nieto was elected to replace Montiel in 2005 as governor, serving from 2005–2011. In 2011, he won the PRI Presidential nomination and immediately became the front-runner for the 2012 elections. 2012 Presidential Election Peà ±a had been a well-liked governor: he had delivered popular public works for the State of Mexico during his administration. His popularity, combined with his movie-star good looks, made him the early favorite in the election. His main opponents were leftist Andres Manuel Là ³pez Obrador of the Party of the Democratic Revolution and Josefina Vzquez Mota of the conservative National Action Party. Peà ±a ran on a platform of security and economic growth and overcame his partys past reputation for corruption in winning the election. A record turnout of 63 percent of eligible voters chose Peà ±a (38% of the vote) over Là ³pez Obrador (32%) and Vzquez (25%). Opposing parties claimed several campaign violations by the PRI, including vote-buying and receiving extra media exposure, but the results stood. Peà ±a took office on Dec. 1, 2012, replacing outgoing President Felipe Calderà ³n. Public Perception Although he was elected easily and most polls suggested a decent approval rating, some disliked Peà ±a Nietos public persona. One of his worst public gaffes came at a book fair, where he claimed to be a big fan of the popular novel The Eagles Throne. When pressed, he could not name the author. This was a serious blunder because the book was written by the prestigious Carlos Fuentes, one of Mexicos most celebrated novelists. Others found Peà ±a Nieto to be robotic and far too slick. He has often been compared, in a negative manner, to American politician John Edwards. The notion (correct or not) that he was a stuffed shirt also raised concerns due to the PRI partys notoriously corrupt past. By August 2016, Peà ±a Nieto had the lowest approval rating of any Mexican president since polling began in 1995. The number dipped even further to a mere 12% when gas prices rose in January 2017.​ Challenges for Peà ±a Nietos Administration President Peà ±a took control of Mexico during a troubled time. One big challenge was fighting the drug lords that control much of Mexico. Powerful cartels with private armies of professional soldiers make billions of dollars trafficking drugs every year. They are ruthless and do not hesitate to murder policemen, judges, journalists, politicians, or anyone else who challenges them. Felipe Calderà ³n, Peà ±a Nieto’s predecessor as president, declared an all-out war on the cartels, kicking over a hornet’s nest of death and mayhem. Mexico’s economy, an important factor for Mexican voters, took a huge hit during the international crisis of 2009. Peà ±a Nieto was friendly with the United States and stated that he wanted to maintain and strengthen economic ties with his neighbor to the north. Peà ±a Nieto has had a mixed record. During his tenure, police captured the nations most notorious drug lord, Joaquin El Chapo Guzman, but Guzman escaped from prison not long afterward. This was a huge embarrassment for the president. Even worse was the disappearance of 43 college students near the town of Iguala in September 2014: they are presumed dead at the hands of the cartels. Further challenges developed during the campaign and election of President Donald Trump in the United States. With proclaimed policies of a border wall paid for by Mexico, U.S.-Mexico relations took a turn for the worse. The End of Peà ±a Nietos Presidency Toward the end of 2018, additional scandals erupted for the Peà ±a Nieto presidency. Construction of a luxury home for the president and his wife by a company that was then awarded a large government contract led to accusations of conflict of interest. The president was never found guilty of wrongdoing, but he nevertheless found himself apologizing for the outcome. Peà ±a Nieto and his administration were also accused of spying on journalists and political activists. At the same time, an increase in drug trafficking and violence seemed to be linked to the outcome of the 2018 elections. Just before leaving the presidency, Peà ±a Nieto was involved with negotiations with the United States and Canada to restructure the NAFTA trade agreement. The new United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement  (USMCA) was signed on Peà ±a Nietos last day in office at the G20 Summit in Argentina. Sources: Puente, Teresa.
